About Me
My name is Júlia Maia, I am a clinical psychologist registered with the Nederlands Instituut van Psychologen (NIP). I work based on cognitive behavioral therapy in combination with the principles of positive psychology. I have a master's degree from the University of Utrecht in Neuropsychology, which allows me to look holistically at each patient, considering their cognitive abilities, behavior, and emotions. I have more than two thousand hours of clinical care and more than ten years of professional updates.
I'm passionate about the work I do with my patients, and I believe that mental health should be accessible to everyone. My goal is to make the patient feel safe and confident about walking with their shoes after the therapeutic process. I always give my best for every single session, and together with the patient, we can explore new ways to think and behave.
“ What we don't need in the midst of struggle is a shame for being human.” - Brenè Brown
My trajectory
I'm originally from São Paulo - Brazil, where I studied Psychology at Presbyterian University Mackenzie. During my undergraduate period, I conducted research in the area of eating disorders and emotional eating based on neuroscience and behavior. I also worked as a professor assistant for four semesters in the course of Neuroscience.
After my graduation, I moved to Holland, where I started my professionalization in Positive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and, simultaneously I started my practice as a clinical psychologist in Amsterdam. I primarily worked with Brazilians and Portuguese speakers, and then I expanded my practice to all international patients who feel comfortable expressing themselves in English.
Subsequently, I completed a Master's in Neuropsychology at Utrecht University. During the course, I was able to explore not only cognitive disorders but also the capacities that can be explored considering the human brain. During my master's degree, I took a course on anxiety and related disorders which also broadened my professional practice. I also conducted research on habit formation and prospective memory during my master's degree.
I currently carry out individual, couples, and family sessions with the aim of promoting well-being through the process of self-knowledge and self-responsibility, considering the full range of emotions present in each stage. I help patients to look at themselves in a more respectful way and together, we can find practical tools to walk in their own shoes in the future.
